چکیده

Low cost composite materials are widely used in civil and structural engineering applications. This project uses Epon and chopped hemp to plasticize a commonly used resin, epoxy resin to lower the cost of the composite and to find out the mechanical and thermal properties of the plasticized epoxy resin to see if it is suitable for the said applications. Epon and chopped hemp were mixed together in the ratio of 85 % to 15 % by weight. Three point bending tests were carried out to evaluate the flexural properties of the plasticized resins. Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis is used to evaluate the thermal properties of the plasticized epoxy resin. The study with epoxy and Epon plus chopped hemp showed that the mechanical properties of the epoxy composite formed were lowered but its ability to dissipate

Effect of surface-functionalization of Na+-montmorillonite nanoclay using 3-aminopropyltrimethoxy silane on the mechanical properties of E-glass chopped strand mat/epoxy composites

In the present work, Na+-montmorillonite nanoclay (Na-MMT) was functionalized using 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (3-APTMS) as a coupling agent. The covalent functionalization of MMT was confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). In the specimen fabrication stage, 5 wt% of pristine MMT or silane-functionalized MMT (f-MMT) were incorporated into an epoxy system and the resulta...

Effects of Chemical Structure Changes on Thermal, Mechanical, and Crystalline Properties of Rigid Rod Epoxy Resins

Effects of chemical structure changes on the thermal, mechanical, and crystalline properties of rigid rod epoxy resins have been studied for azomethine epoxy, biphenol epoxy, and tetramethyl biphenol epoxy. Rigid rod epoxies have exhibited better properties than those of the flexible bisphenol A epoxy. The chemical structures of both rigid rod epoxy and curing agent control the properties of cu...

Investigating the Effect of Modifier Chain Length on Insulation Properties of Polysulfide Modified Epoxy Resin

Polysulfide resins, with trade name of  G4 and G112, with short and long chain lengths respectively, were used as reactive modifiers to toughen epoxy resin. The effects of molecular weights of G4 and G112 on impact resistance, dielectric constant, thermal conductivity as well as decomposition  heat and adhesion properties of toughened epoxy were investigated. The impact strength and the diel...

Environmental effects on mechanical properties of glass/epoxy and fiber metal laminates, Part II: Isothermal aging

The aim of this study is to investigate effects of isothermal aging on mechanical properties of fiber metal laminates (FMLs) and glass/epoxy composites. For this purpose, both materials were fabricated using the wet lay-up manufacturing technique under vacuum pressure. Both the glass/epoxy composites and the FML specimens were then subjected to isothermal aging (130°C, dried air) for up to 5 we...

Assessing the Effect of Nylon 66 and Alumina on Mechanical and Thermal Properties of Epoxy-based Adhesives Through Taguchi Experimental Design Analysis

The effect of alumina and tough nylon 66 on microparticles’ presence the mechanical and thermal properties of epoxy adhesives is assessed here. In order to distribute the adhesive formulation components, in a uniform manner a mechanical stirrer is applied. The effect a combined percentage of nylon66 at (20،30،40 pph) and alumina micro-particles 20 μ (50,60,70 pph) selected based on Taguchi expe...
